Proverbs 6:16–19 is a guide for us to those things that our Lord finds detestable. One such thing is a heart that devises wicked plans. Before the flood, we read in Genesis 6:5: “The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” After the flood, God looked at Noah and his family and concluded that little had changed: “for the intention of man’s heart is evil from his youth” (Genesis 8:21). The human heart is wicked. We are guilty of this sin when we give no thought to God in our plans and unless we are born again by the Spirit of God.
