The gospel tells us how the Lord Jesus accomplished salvation for us, through his incarnation, life, death, resurrection and ascension to the Father’s right hand in heaven. But our salvation is not just “out there”: our text in 2Cor.5 reminds us that through faith God brings us “in here” – we are made members of the new creation that has already begun in Christ! (see also Eph.2:1-10; Col.1:13-14, 3:1-4). By God’s grace, believers are “in Christ” – this is who they really are, according to the Word of God.
